Advocating
for Farmers

In the heart of Alabama’s agricultural community, I am proud to stand as a dedicated advocate and leader at Alabama Farm Credit. With a career deeply rooted in supporting farmers and fostering rural development, I have worked hard to advance the interests of agricultural producers across the state. My unwavering commitment to the farming community is reflected not just in words, but in tangible actions that have driven growth and stability for countless local producers.

As the CEO of Alabama Farm Credit, I have consistently pursued my passion for empowering farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses. I recognize the challenges faced by those who cultivate the land, and I have championed initiatives that provide financial solutions tailored to the unique needs of rural communities. From offering specialized loans for equipment and land purchases to structuring flexible repayment plans, I ensure that Alabama Farm Credit remains a lifeline for farmers navigating economic uncertainties. In the past 6 years, AFC has grown by over 60%, achieved the highest credit quality in our history, and shared more than $50 million in patronage with our members.

My advocacy extends beyond financial services. I actively collaborate with local organizations, agricultural boards, and community leaders to address systemic issues affecting farmers. Whether lobbying for favorable policies or participating in grassroots initiatives, I believe my efforts contribute to creating a more resilient agricultural sector in Alabama. I am committed to maintaining strong local food systems and preserving the agricultural heritage that defines our region.

One of the community projects I’m most proud of is my work with agricultural youth organizations. A common question in our industry is how to ensure there will be a next generation of producers. I firmly believe that investing in youth programs is the critical answer. From supporting the 4-H Foundation to providing agricultural project and summer camp opportunities for kids from both rural and urban backgrounds, to attending the state FFA convention each year and witnessing some of the most impressive young leaders in our state ignite their passion for agriculture, these experiences continually inspire me. I’m especially proud of creating AFC’s Together We Grow nonprofit foundation, which is dedicated to meeting the scholarship needs of the next generation as they pursue careers in and around agriculture. The youth are our future, and my efforts in this space are among the most rewarding aspects of my career.

Farmers across Alabama often express their appreciation for my approachable leadership style and deep understanding of their needs. I strive to blend financial expertise with genuine empathy, fostering lasting relationships and trust within the agricultural community. As one local farmer shared, "Mel Koller and Alabama Farm Credit don’t just see us as clients, they see us as partners in growing Alabama’s future."

In an era where rural economies face increasing pressure, I remain steadfast in my commitment to supporting Alabama’s farmers. Through my leadership at Alabama Farm Credit, I continue to advocate tirelessly for farmers, ensuring that the agricultural roots of Alabama remain strong for generations to come.
